About Lancaster Shoulder

Lancaster Shoulder is a specialized orthopedic practice dedicated exclusively to the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of complex shoulder conditions. Founded by Dr. Michael J. Bercik Jr., MD, and established in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in April 2016, the practice was built to fill a genuine and critical gap in regional care: the absence of a dedicated shoulder specialist capable of managing the most advanced, revision-level cases locally.

Lancaster Shoulder operates within a broader orthopedic framework while maintaining a distinct clinical identity centered entirely on shoulder surgery. That focus, combined with Dr. Bercik’s national research profile, faculty presence, and experience with the most challenging cases in the specialty, has made Lancaster Shoulder the region’s recognized referral destination for both patients and physicians seeking definitive answers for difficult shoulder problems.

Why Lancaster Shoulder Exists

Established April 2016 by Dr. Michael J. Bercik Jr., MD

Before Dr. Bercik arrived in Lancaster, patients with severe shoulder pathology or failed prior surgeries had limited options. The region lacked a specialist capable of managing tertiary-level shoulder cases, and those patients were routinely referred to Philadelphia or beyond for care that should have been available closer to home.

Lancaster Shoulder was founded to change that. Dr. Bercik built the practice around a commitment to bringing the most advanced shoulder expertise to Lancaster County and the surrounding Pennsylvania communities, including the willingness to take on last-resort cases and complex revisions that standard orthopedic settings are not equipped to handle.

Since its founding, the practice has grown into a trusted regional referral hub for both patients and referring physicians. It serves multiple locations including Lancaster, Ephrata, and Mount Joy, and has built a reputation grounded in outcomes, patient education, and a standard of care that draws on Dr. Bercik’s ongoing contributions to national shoulder surgery research and education.

What Makes Lancaster Shoulder Different

The Only Regional Destination for Complex and Revision Cases

Before Dr. Bercik, Lancaster patients with failed shoulder surgeries or severe pathology traveled to Philadelphia. Lancaster Shoulder was built specifically to solve that problem.

National Research Profile in a Local Practice

Dr. Bercik’s participation in ShARC and his role as Arthrex national faculty mean his patients benefit from access to the same surgical knowledge and innovation being generated at the country’s leading academic shoulder programs.

Advanced 3D Surgical Planning

The practice uses 3D imaging and preoperative planning technology to improve accuracy and outcomes in shoulder replacement and complex reconstruction.

High-Volume Surgical Experience

Concentrated surgical volume in a single subspecialty produces depth of experience and refinement of technique that general orthopedic practices cannot replicate.

A Practice Built Around the Hard Cases

Surgeons across the region refer their most challenging shoulder cases to Lancaster Shoulder. That trust is the most meaningful credential the practice holds.

Evidence That Shapes the Field

Dr. Bercik does not just practice shoulder surgery. He publishes the research that informs how other surgeons across the country practice it.

Lancaster Shoulder fosters a patient-first environment built around collaboration, continuous learning, and uncompromising excellence in shoulder care. Every member of the team understands that patients who arrive at this practice often come with complex histories, prior failed treatments, and a level of need that requires both technical precision and genuine human care.

Beyond direct patient care, Dr. Bercik is committed to advancing the orthopedic community through his roles as a national faculty member for Arthrex and a principal investigator for the ShARC research committee. Through these partnerships, he leads surgical labs and educational summits that mentor fellow surgeons on cutting-edge techniques. His peer-reviewed publications generate the data that defines modern surgical standards, improving safety and functional outcomes for patients well beyond his own operating room.

Locally, Dr. Bercik has run surgical labs and educational programs specifically for Lancaster County-based physicians, strengthening the entire region’s capacity to deliver advanced orthopedic care.
