Arthroscopic shoulder surgery to improve shoulder range of motion
We use our arms for many types of movements: Overhead, behind, sideways, and forward reaches. We are able to move our arms so freely because of the shoulder joint. When this joint becomes injured or limited in some way, it can drastically decrease our quality of life.
Shoulder immobility can be caused by many conditions, but frozen shoulder and impingement syndrome are two of the most common causes. If nonsurgical methods such as physical therapy are ineffective, Dr. Bercik may recommend a minimally invasive type of surgery, known as Arthroscopic surgery. This type of surgery is performed using pencil eraser-sized incisions through which equipment and a tiny camera are inserted. Dr. Bercik is then guided by the screen to repair damaged tissue and improve movement of the shoulder.
Arthroscopy for frozen shoulder
Frozen shoulder, known as adhesive capsulitis, leads to shoulder stiffness and pain. If not treated, this condition leads the shoulder to “freeze” and makes it difficult—or impossible—to move the shoulder. This is seen more often in patients above the age of 40 and in women.
During the surgical procedure, Dr. Bercik will cut through tight portions of the shoulder capsule in order to loosen the capsule and break up any scar tissue. Depending on your condition, he will repair and reattach any damaged soft tissues, in addition to manipulating the shoulder to increase movement.
Arthroscopy for shoulder impingement syndrome
Shoulder impingement syndrome, also known as shoulder bursitis or rotator cuff tendonitis, is caused by the rotator cuff tendons becoming trapped or compressed. This can cause pain and difficulty moving the shoulder joint. During surgery, Dr. Bercik will perform subacromial decompression. This is a procedure to increase space between the rotator cuff and acromion in order to increase movement ability and free the tendons in the shoulder. The goal of this procedure is to eliminate symptoms and prevent any future trapping of tendons in the shoulder.
