Common Conditions Requiring Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery

Arthroscopic shoulder surgery is often necessary for a complete return to functionality after severe trauma to the area. Arthroscopic procedures are minimally invasive and require repair through instruments inserted in tiny keyhole-size incisions. This aggravates surrounding tissue significantly less than open surgeries, which require a scalpel and sutures are needed to cut open and close the site.

To know whether arthroscopic surgery may be an option for you, it’s important to understand what kinds of conditions are treated by this type of procedure.

While arthroscopic shoulder surgery can be used on a variety of conditions, three of the most common conditions we see are:

SLAP Repair

The Superior Labrum Anterior and Posterior, also known as the SLAP, affects both the front and back of the labrum when torn. When a SLAP tear occurs, it causes injury to the circle of cartilage that encases the shoulder socket—also known as the labrum.

To treat this condition, arthroscopic surgery can be used to restore the labrum’s original position around the rim of the shoulder socket.

Shoulder Dislocation

The arm is one of the most mobile joints in the body, and because of this, the head of the humerus (upper arm) is much less stable in the shoulder socket. This can lead to dislocations of the shoulder through impact or awkward movement.

For young athletes, labrum damage is the most common result of shoulder dislocation. This often requires a Bankart repair, which is an arthroscopic surgery to reattach the labrum to the joint capsule. Other procedures can be performed to reduce muscular instability and even reposition bones to improve overall stability.

Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is an extremely common shoulder injury treated by arthroscopic surgery, and it occurs when the shoulder joint capsule is tight and contracted.

While nonsurgical lines of treatment are often successful in treating frozen shoulders, sometimes surgery is needed to loosen tissue and allow freer movement of the shoulder.
