Shoulder Surgery: How to Prepare

You should make an appointment for a preoperative office visit to go over your medical history and have a physical examination. This will inform the surgeon of what needs to be done and make them aware of any specifications unique to your condition. While each patient will be given individual recommendations, there are general guidelines for what should be completed within one month of your procedure.

Depending on whether it is recommended for you by your surgeon, you may need to have a blood test, blood count, electrocardiogram (EKG), or meet with the anesthesiologist during the preoperative assessment. The priority is your safety and promoting a healthy and speedy recovery, so it is better to over-prepare than under-prepare.

On the day of your surgery, you should wash the area that will be operated on to decrease the risk of infection. For the week or two prior, try to avoid any scratches, burns, or cuts to the area. You do not need to shave the area.

As far as eating and drinking go, you should not eat the night or morning before your surgery. It is important to have an empty stomach when receiving anesthesia. Generally, you will be able to have a little bit of water or clear liquids 6 hours before your procedure. If you have any medications requiring food or drink, speak with your surgeon about managing this.

On the day of surgery, your surgeon will recommend anesthesia or a nerve block to the procedure area so you do not feel pain. Overall, your surgeon and healthcare team will ensure you know everything you need to prepare for the day of surgery, but having a general idea of what to expect can help calm your nerves and ensure you are confident and in control of your medical care.
